Arabica Coffee

Arabica makes up 95% of PNG’s total coffee production, and the Highlands region is globally recognized for producing some of the world’s most distinctive Arabica profiles.   

Typica

One of the earliest varieties introduced to PNG in the 1930s, Typica is still found in many traditional family coffee gardens.  

Profile: Clean, mild sweetness, smooth and floral.  

Where it grows: Eastern Highlands, Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Simbu, Southern Highlands.

Arusha

A high-altitude variety believed to originate from Tanzania.  

Profile: Bright acidity, fruity aroma, lively and clean finish.  

Where it grows: Goroka, Okapa, Kainantu, Simbu, Jiwaka.

Blue Mountain (Jamaica Blue Mountain Typica)

Introduced from Jamaica, this is one of PNG’s most prized coffees.  

Profile: Balanced, smooth, sweet chocolate tones, gentle acidity.  

Where it grows: Okapa (famous for “Okapa Blue”), Goroka, Simbu, Jiwaka.

Bourbon

A sweet and complex heirloom variety originally from Réunion Island.  

Profile: Caramel sweetness, soft fruit notes, bright acidity.  

Where it grows: Selected highland blocks and specialty farms.

Catimor (Hybrid Arabica)

A high-yield, disease-resistant hybrid used in many new replanting programs.  

Profile: Clean, mild, medium body, sometimes herbal.  

Where it grows: Across all Highlands provinces for rehabilitation projects.

Caturra, Mundo Novo & Other Hybrids

These compact, high-yielding varieties are grown for consistency and ease of production.  Profile: Balanced, sweet, medium acidity.
